Project Details

Project Description:

My lab investigates the intersection between orthopedic disease and metabolic syndrome in multiple species, as well as the effect of exercise on many body systems. My lab can support projects for one to two students.

 Possible summer projects include:

How fitness in horses affects muscle recruitment.

Radiology: analyzing survey results on how radiology is taught internationally.

Radiology: assessing students abilities to take radiographs after learning positioning via a model or texts.

Muscle activation during fitness training (this is a canine project and has some ophtho aspects with Dr Komaromy and rehabilitation aspects with Dr Shull).

Synovial fluid and blood biomarkers for metabolic osteoarthritis in the horse

Harvesting placentas and assessing metabolic status in horses during pregnancy.

The horse as a model for metabolic disease during pregnancy

The effects use of the Eagle Pro Six has on horses gait and behavior.

The effects of concussion on the brain and blood biomarkers.

The effect of external pressure on joints.

Saddle/Bridle/Rider interactions.

note: some of my projects happen at the horse farm so a bike or car can help! I have a bike I can loan if desired.

Skills Required:

Project dependent: Benchtop skills include: ELISAs, RTqPCR, histology, western blotting Clinical skills: treadmill exercise in dogs, Acoustic myography, subjective and objective  lameness evaluation (horse or dog), radiography, blood draws, catheter placement, dynamic testing, exercise trials, placental anatomy, surgery & anesthesia (ruminants/pigs).
I have  a strength in helping students gain confidence in their speaking skills and developing their writing skills.

Project Supervision:

I am passionately focused on mentoring the next generation of clinician scientists. Students from my lab have gone on to present their abstracts at national and international scientific conferences, have published papers, and have won the best DVM student oral presentation award 5 of the past 8 years and the best PhD student award in 2023. We have dedicated writing time.  I encourage your taking ownership of your project and working with your peers while being present for help when needed so you can succeed. Formal meetings are once a week but interaction occurs more frequently via email texts or in person.
